For Rhiannon and Mark, becoming parents was always part of the plan. Adoption had always been something they wanted to do, but they had first hoped to have children biologically. Following previous medical conditions and surgeries, Rhiannon was advised that IVF was unlikely to be successful. While they always knew they wanted to adopt, it brought this plan sooner than they imagined.
Both work with children and young people, with Mark a teacher and Rhiannon working within a youth organisation. Their professional experience, including supporting looked-after children, gave them a strong understanding of the challenges some children face and the importance of providing a loving, secure home.
When they approached Adoption in Merseyside, they embraced every stage of the process. Although they already knew about attachment and trauma, they found the preparation training invaluable and formed lasting friendships with fellow adopters, many of whom remain part of their support network today.
They first met their son Keegan at a “bump into” session, the start of the introductions process. Just days before his second birthday, he moved in with them. While the early days brought challenges with sleeping, eating and trust, the family received support from the Adoption Support Team at AiM, helping Keegan settle into family life.
“Keegan was very shy and reserved when he came to us. He didn’t trust adults very much, but with patience and a stable environment, he was able to thrive and really come into his own.”
After such a positive experience, Rhiannon and Mark decided to adopt again. This time, the focus was not only on preparing themselves but also on helping Keegan get ready for his new role as a big brother.
When Naya joined the family, Keegan loved her her immediately.
“Sometimes I thought Keegan was the social worker! He was always checking we were giving Naya the right amount of milk and asking how much sleep she was getting. He was so protective of her and loved her straight away.”
Today, Rhiannon and Mark can’t imagine life without their two children.
“Naya and Keegan are the best things that ever happened to us. We knew something was missing from our lives, but we never imagined just how much joy they would bring. We simply couldn’t imagine life without them now.”
